"I absolutely believe Yammer has increased clarity of purpose and vision at ACT Conferencing. It has eliminated unnecessary filters and given us a way to communicate across silos.
— Mark Kelly
President & COO
A leading provider of audio, web, and videoconferencing services, ACT Conferencing has a clear mission: to bring people together to boost productivity. When its management team realized an enterprise social network could do that for its own workforce, ACT rolled out Yammer companywide.
Only 70 of ACT’s 350 employees are based at its Lakewood, Colorado, headquarters. The rest operate from five remote offices on three continents. So even more than most enterprises, ACT’s network is the backbone of its business.
Thanks to employees who were intrigued by Yammer’s capabilities and encouraged their peers to use it, the free version of the networking software quickly gained traction within the company. Noticing Yammer saved employees time and created serendipitous connections, ACT upgraded to premium in 2011. Today, executives consider Yammer vital to company culture and employee productivity.
When ACT rolled out Yammer, employees bonded across geographic and departmental borders over shared interests. This socializing quickly built a sense of community in a company with employees scattered around the world. Far more than a virtual water cooler, Yammer is an effective business tool that boosts productivity at ACT by creating a fluid conversation space where employees can find experts—and answers—faster than ever before. A technical question on Yammer receives an answer within an hour versus three days via the help desk. “Yammer lets peers share tips on tech issues, so we don’t have to bug the IT department,” says Marketing Specialist Brittany Lang. “When people see the answers on Yammer, they don’t keep asking those same questions again and again.”
To further capitalize on Yammer’s capabilities, ACT is embedding a Yammer feed directly into SharePoint to combine the two knowledge bases. Employees can collaborate with coworkers through a faster, more seamless communication channel that integrates document sharing and makes SharePoint mobile. They can search both platforms to find relevant Yammer conversations without leaving SharePoint.
ACT has also benefited from employee recognition on Yammer. Previously, ACT managers praised jobs well done in the monthly company newsletter, which wasn’t widely read, lacked immediacy, and didn’t allow employees to comment on—and potentially build on—workplace successes. Now, managers use Yammer Praise to acknowledge top performers. This recognition comes from a range of sources as employees chime in to congratulate coworkers, thereby boosting morale.
