Leading the Mobile Collaboration Movement with New Apps

By in Product Updates on August 15, 2011

If you’re like us, you probably can’t live without your smartphone.  We all depend on our mobile devices to help us manage our personal affairs and a growing number of us are now relying on them for day-to-day business.  In fact, one in five people in the information workforce conduct business on the go, according to a Forrester Research Report (by Ted Schadler) “The Internet Crushes the Work/Life Boundary.”

At Yammer, we make mobile collaboration with your colleagues a top priority and were even recognized by Forrester Research Inc. as a leader in the space.  We are proud to have been named a leader in their August 2011 report “Forrester Wave™: Mobile Collaboration, Q3 2011“.

We appreciate this honor and are excited to keep the momentum going with today’s release of our upgraded iPhone, iPad, and BlackBerry applications. The upgrades deliver enhanced experiences optimized for each device.

Major updates for the iPhone and iPad include:

  • Notifications – Keep track of new messages, @mentions, replies, likes, invites, and new followers in a separate Notifications tab.
  • New Feed View (iPhone only) – Easily follow multiple conversations in a feed with the two most recent replies displayed directly underneath the original message.
  • Updated Main Tabs – Intuitively navigate to different pages from updated main tabs for Groups, Members, and Private Messages.

For the BlackBerry application, you can expect to see improved BES support as well as new Unread Message Counts, which track unread messages from the Yammer icon on your home screen when the application is out of view.

Now you can stay connected to your company social network anytime, anywhere with ease.  Download the new iOS and BlackBerry applications today from The App Store and BlackBerry App World respectively.

Great work. But what I don’t understand is the lack of an update for Android. The app on the Android-platform is lacking so much basic features like photo-upload and threaded messages. We could really use an update on that platform.

    Succes

      Hi Erik,

Thank you for your comment. We are actually going to release the new Android app in the next few weeks.

Please let us know what you think of it; it’s going to be a major improvement over the last one.

      Thanks!

I am unable to get push notifications for any alerts at all on either my iPad or my iPhone. Any idea what the problem could be? Also, content in the app does not refresh automatically, I have to manually refresh each tab.

    • Maria says:

Hi Andrew! Thank you for your comment. Can you please file a ticket at help.yammer.com and tell us more about the troubles you are having?

      Thank you!

Really looking forward to the update for Android. Latest stats say that Android is now 44% of the market against Apple’s 18%. Next few weeks is a pretty open comment. Any particular date in mind?
    Regards,
    Wayne

    • Maria says:

Thanks for the question, Wayne. We do not have a firm date right now, but it will be very very soon. I’ll update in this comment when we have it.

  8. Bart says:

We (board of a proces management foundation) have started to make use of Yammer to facilitate our control processes. We all make a lot of use of our portable devices (Android, iPhone, iPad). On the iPhone/iPad version i do miss the ability to see pages and files. This is a big lack in functionality, because we decided to co-produce all our plans in Pages. Are there any expectations when the mobile-apps of Yammer will support pages and files?

    • Maria says:

Hello Bart! Thanks for sharing your use of Yammer with us. Really thrilled to see that Pages is playing such a pivotal role in your process. We do plan to support mobile (across iPad, iPhone, Android) — it’s a priority for next year. We’d be delighted to talk to you in more detail!

      • Josien says:

Hello Maria. Is there already an update regarding the ability to see pages and files on your smart phone? I agree with Bart that this is a big lack in the functionality, although yammer in itself is a great tool.

        • Maria says:

Josien — great question and we realize that it’s lacking. We’re working on including support for Files and Pages in our iOS apps this year. Which mobile app do you use?

  9. Hi, we use Yammer for almost a year now and are very satisfied.
Only after I reinstalled the Adroid App (v1) on my Samsung Galaxy S, I do not get the app working anymore. It starts up and begins to refresh, but after a few seconds the App shuts down, without any error message.

In the Android market I read similar messages about the app.
Can you inform us about the status of the app and what you will do about it?

  10. Zakiya says:

We are eager to use Yammer within our organisation and I have been driving this process but I just installed the app on my Blackberry and it doesn’t work at all! I am seriously disappointed that the product is completely useless to most of us in the organisation as we are on Blackberry mostly.

I keep seeing a message saying that the network is out of range so I can’t post anything. I cannot send Private Messages using the mobile app and I can’t identify members of my group to pick who I want to speak to!

I’m hoping there is a solution to this otherwise I will have to abandon the idea of introducing Yammer across the organisation.

    • Maria says:

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Blackberry app, Zakiya. I wish that your experience could’ve been better, and I agree that the Blackberry experience hasn’t been optimal. We are working on some improvements that can hopefully resolve your problems.

Regarding the network being out of range and not being able to send a private message, that sounds like a technical issue to me. Can you tell us more by emailing support at help (at) yammer (dot) com or by filing a ticket at help.yammer.com?

      Thank you!
